Ben Brown (Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Māhuta) says his propensity toward performance poetry is probably the result of his desire to appreciate the sound of his own voice in the hope that others may share his own enthusiasm for it.
The Motueka born poet’s work has been widely published and broadcast on radio and has appeared on posters plastered from Blenheim to Baltimore. But his ‘in your face’ style is best heard live. Ben was awarded the Maori Writer’s Residency at the Michael King Writers’ Centre for 2011, and lives in Lyttelton, with the aforementioned family and cat – still ungrateful.
