» Music » Dudley Benson Live with the Dawn Chorus
Critically-acclaimed songwriter and performer, Dudley Benson brings to Nelson an unforgettable and entirely unique experience. Juxtaposing a close-harmony vocal quartet with the powerhouse vocal percussion of Australian-based beatboxer Hopey One, Benson presents selections from his debut album The Awakening (2008) and from Forest: Songs by Hirini Melbourne (2010).
A rare live performer, Dudley Benson’s signature style of chamber-pop has charmed audiences and won over critics nationwide, with the former Christchurch Cathedral choirboy’s recent album of interpretations of Hirini Melbourne’s bird waiata receiving universal praise and a nomination for the 2011 Taite Music Prize. Prepare to be enthralled.
‘Benson is the most eccentric and fascinating musician to have emerged in this country in the last ten years. His breathlessly lovely songs have the vivid intensity and odd logic of dreams; walk-on characters include the Virgin Mary, sheep, hedgehogs, Southland murderer Minnie Dean, various figures from Greek and Maori mythology, and a flock of native birds. His stage show with the Dawn Chorus was so brilliant, it quite literally made me weep with joy.’
