Historic movies featuring Nelson give us an insight into our history. This year we present a series of silent films that showcase the city’s links to its harbour and the sea, accompanied by renowned silent movie keyboard artist Gabor Tolnay.
They are followed by two later films that show the development of the harbour between 1949 and 1980. In 1949, Bill Parr, a senior executive of the Harbour Board made a 20-minute film that was projected with his spoken commentary. The script remains, and re-creates the spirit of the time. Thirty years later, another film was commissioned by the Harbour Board. These two movies offer a fascinating glimpse of the recent past.
The original films have been restored by the New Zealand Film Archive in association with the Nelson Film Society.
