Boom town, modern marvel, commercial hub, where east meets west, playground for tourists, crawling with ex-pats, built by Indians, owned by Arabs... Joe Bennett uncovers the real Dubai in a journey that spans the elite suburban castles and golf clubs of the nouveau riche, to the makeshift cricket fields of Indian construction workers.

He visits an indoor ski field, bars, parties and offices, in a cocktail of sympathy, scepticism, humour and curiosity, revealing a country that can be at once cruel and a source of hope, free of boundaries and yet highly censored, exploitative and full of opportunity.
