The Masked Parade opens the Nelson Arts Festival with an explosion of colour, music and performance in mask, themed to the Playful Pacific.

Celebrate this beautiful part of the world and show our international visitors how we love to play. Dance, traditional costumes, age-old games, myths and legends, celebrate the cultures and colours of the Pacific.Entry is free and open to all, including preschool, school, community, business and family groups, and individuals.

Cash prizes, in all categories, including the Supreme Mask Award.

Parade Route: exit Montgomery Sq onto Bridge St, Trafalgar St, Hardy St, Morrison St, Selwyn Pl, Church St, across Hardy St to Montgomery Sq. Assembly Area: Montgomery Sq.

The More FM Carnivale fires up the festival straight after the Masked Parade. It’s party time in Trafalgar Street with great sounds from Batucada Sound Machine plus street performances, food stalls and Nelson’s own Kath Bee performing for the kids.

Sonic Live Zone 1903

Join the party as Sonic Live Zone 1903 kicks into gear. Catch one of the best live bands to come out of New Zealand, Midnight Youth, winner of Best Rock Album and Best Group at the 2009 New Zealand Music Awards! Hot on their heels are Knives At Noon direct from Dunedin and your ‘doom-pop’ fix.

Please Note: There will be zero alcohol tolerance for underage drinking. Those with alcohol on them or  under the influence will be banned from the event.
